[00:00:00] Speaker A: Foreign. [00:00:06] Speaker B: To the Summer Journey podcast with Haven and Ella. [00:00:17] Speaker A: Hi, guys. Welcome back to our podcast. [00:00:20] Speaker B: On week. [00:00:21] Speaker A: What are we on week? [00:00:22] Speaker B: We are on week four. [00:00:23] Speaker A: Four. Week four. A whole month. [00:00:25] Speaker B: I know. [00:00:26] Speaker A: Whole month. So fun. Today we're going to be learning about Samuel anointing David as king. Right. [00:00:34] Speaker B: But before we get into that, be listening for the new code word. And what was the old code word? [00:00:44] Speaker A: It was obedience. [00:00:46] Speaker B: Yes. [00:00:50] Speaker A: Okay. But today we're talking about Samuel anointing David as king. So the Lord said to Samuel, how long are you going to be sad that I've rejected Saul as king of my people? He told him to go to Jesse of Bethlehem because he had selected a king from one of his sons. And he said, bring your oil to anoint him, whoever this king will be. So Samuel, Samuel was off to go to Jesse of Bethlehem, but he was afraid that Saul was going to find out about how he was anointing a new king. He was scared that Saul would kill him. [00:01:37] Speaker B: Yeah, yeah. So in Samuel's fear, the Lord said to him, take a young cow with you and say, I have come to sacrifice the Lord and then invite Jesse to the sacrifice and you will anoint for me the one I show you. So he kind of has like this plan set out. So it's like, not suspicious or anything. [00:02:02] Speaker A: Yeah. And Samuel did that. And so when Jesse and his sons arrived, Samuel saw the oldest. So he kind of went down, like from oldest to youngest, I think, going to these sons, seeing if they are worthy to be king, I guess. Right? Yeah. So he goes to the oldest, Eliab, and said, certainly this is the king of the Lord has selected for himself. But the Lord said to Samuel, do not look at his appearance or his height because I have rejected him. And then this is like so good, what he says. He says, humans do not see what the Lord sees, for humans see what is visible, but the Lord sees the heart. [00:02:46] Speaker B: So good. [00:02:47] Speaker A: So good. [00:02:48] Speaker B: Yeah. So Samuel was like, certainly this tall, handsome, good looking, good like, stature, oldest son is going to be our next king. And God was like, nope. [00:03:02] Speaker A: Yeah, it's cool. Because God cares more about our heart than our outward appearance, we might think. Right. Our human sin and our care of how we look. Or like, oh, people, you know, people care more about our appearances, but God cares more about our heart and our heart posture. Yeah. [00:03:23] Speaker B: So after next, Jesse called his son his next son and presented him to Samuel. And Samuel said, the Lord hasn't chosen this one either. And then they presented his third son. But Samuel again said that the Lord did not choose this son. [00:03:45] Speaker A: So I feel like Samuel's probably like, okay, now this one. What about this one? Like, why? Like, what is going on? Why are you saying no to all these? Like, I bet he was exhausted. Like, probably choose one. Like, why is this one not good? Real? So Jesse presented seven of his sons to Samuel, which is like, just imagine, seven people. [00:04:12] Speaker B: That's crazy. [00:04:13] Speaker A: Yeah. Samuel said, the Lord hasn't chosen any of these. Do you have any other sons? Like, these people are not good enough. We could probably just go from one to the other. [00:04:24] Speaker B: Nope, nope, nope, nope, nope. [00:04:26] Speaker A: Are there any more desperate, like, anymore? Please, Just any. [00:04:31] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:04:33] Speaker A: And he goes, yes, my youngest son. So they're probably thinking, like, this little. Little dude. Yeah, my youngest. But is he a baby? But he's out tending to the sheep. Jesse said. And Samuel replied, send for him. We won't sit down to eat until he gets here. So he sent for David. And when Samuel saw David, the Lord said, anoint him, for he is the one. So Samuel took the oil and anointed David in the presence of his brothers. And the spirit of the Lord came powerfully on David from that day forward. [00:05:11] Speaker B: So that took a long process. But it's actually so funny because they were looking for another king. And where's David? He's tending his sheep. [00:05:22] Speaker A: Like, he's just doing his job, which. [00:05:26] Speaker B: I think is just, like, so important to this story, because it's like, the. [00:05:30] Speaker A: Other sons were there. They were ready. [00:05:31] Speaker B: They'd be like, all right, maybe I'll be king. [00:05:34] Speaker A: And then David, just, like, he's doing his job. He's doing my job with my sheep. [00:05:40] Speaker B: Because he cared more about tending the sheep than he did about king, like, being king. And that's where God knows our heart more and he loves our heart more. And so. [00:05:51] Speaker A: And then, so Samuel anointed David with the oil. And after the Spirit, the spirit of the Lord came onto David, right? So we see how God empowers his people with his spirit, David, but also us. Right? [00:06:07] Speaker B: Because today, then, this is still. Remember, this is still ultimate testament. So this was before Jesus had, like, died and rose again. So they didn't get the Holy Spirit in them like we did like we do. And so this was very important because God only chose certain people. And so. [00:06:28] Speaker A: Okay, and we know that David did not look like a king. He looked like a shepherd, like Havin said. But God did see his heart in his heart posture and chose him to be the king over his other brothers. And it kind of points to Jesus as well. Jesus looks just like any other man. He. He didn't, you know, stand out to anybody, but he looked like a normal man around the people, like, around him. But the powerful things he did stood him out. Yeah, from the crowds. Right. Because he's the Son of God and the Savior of the world. He died for our sins. And if we trust him and believe what he did for our sins, and our sins are forgiven and we are welcomed into God's kingdom with him. Right? Kingdom. Kind of like David being king. [00:07:26] Speaker B: Yeah. Okay, so I hope you heard the code word a couple times. This one was a little bit tricky. You kind of. Kind of have to, like, see what's the. What the point was. But that was really all we had for this week. We have one question to take away, and it's what did you discover about God in this passage? So just write it down in your journal. Show us on Sunday if you want. Just, like, pray about it, think about it. [00:08:00] Speaker A: Yeah, but that's all we had. [00:08:04] Speaker B: Bye.
