[00:00:00] Speaker A: Foreign. [00:00:06] Speaker B: Hey, welcome to the Summer Journey podcast with Haven and Ella. [00:00:15] Speaker A: Hey, guys. Welcome back to episode two. We hope you guys had fun listening in last time. Haven, what was our code word from last week? [00:00:26] Speaker B: So our code word was content. [00:00:37] Speaker A: So if you wrote content on your Summer Journey booklet, you get a shout out. Okay, so today we're going to be talking about how Saul rescued Israel. So Israel had enemies from other nations. One of their enemies was the Ammonites. Nahash was their leader. And he and his soldiers surrounded a town in Israel named Jabesh Gilead. And the elders of Jabesh Gilead sent messengers throughout Israel to ask for help to defend this city. [00:01:16] Speaker B: So Saul was their leader, like we learned last week. So he became their king. And so when he heard about this and that the people needed help, God sent his spirit over him. And Saul became angry. So he gathered a large army and came and defeated Nahash and all of his soldiers. [00:01:36] Speaker A: Yeah. So God sent his spirit on the people to accomplish his will. When, sir, when Saul heard the people needed help, the spirit of God came powerfully on him to do the Lord's work. That's good. So then Samuel came and gave a final speech to all of Israel. He said, here is the king you have chosen. If you fear the Lord, then both of you and your king will follow the Lord. However, if you disobey, disobey the Lord, his hands will be against you. Worship the Lord with all your heart. And then the Philistines gathered to fight against Israel. So Saul summoned all of his troops to join him in Gilgal. And he waited seven days for the scheduled time that Samuel had set. But Samuel had not yet arrived. So Saul's troops began to leave because they were so afraid, because they're. They're. They were confused. They were like, where's Samuel? [00:02:33] Speaker B: Right. [00:02:34] Speaker A: Yeah. And we can obey God even when we don't understand his plans. Right. Saul and his troops were right gripped with fear. So Saul became impatient, and he said, bring me the burnt offering and the fellowship offering. Then he offered the burnt offering. [00:02:53] Speaker B: And the thing about that, that was not his. It was not his because they were supposed to wait for Samuel. But he got impatient. [00:03:02] Speaker A: He got impatient. Yes. [00:03:04] Speaker B: So Samuel came back, and he was like, what have you done? What in the world is going on? This is not right. And then Saul was like, well, look, when I saw the troops, they were leaving. You had not come at the scheduled time. You were late. So I forced myself to make the burnt offering. And so he was basically like, well, you weren't Here. So I just took care of it myself. [00:03:25] Speaker A: Yeah. So he wasn't patient in what was God's plan for the troops and for Samuel and Saul. He did not do what the Lord commanded them to do. [00:03:39] Speaker B: Have you ever been to, like, an amusement park or something where you had to wait in lines? [00:03:45] Speaker A: Yeah. Huh? Yes. [00:03:46] Speaker B: Oh, my gosh. Or, like, the lunch line. I always remembered the lunch line. I was always, like, talking to people in the front of the line, like, hey, how's it going? And, like, kind of like cutting. [00:03:56] Speaker A: Or like, when you play, like, nine square. [00:03:58] Speaker B: Yes. [00:03:59] Speaker A: You get out and you're like, oh, there's my buddy. I'm just gonna go up with them. [00:04:02] Speaker B: All the time because. [00:04:04] Speaker A: So impatient. [00:04:04] Speaker B: Yeah. I would not be patient in the line, and I'd just be like, I need to go now. And I think that's what Samuel was really doing. He wasn't patient in anything he did. But I think that's. It's really hard to be patient. I'm not a patient person. I'm a go, go, go. So I don't know. I think we need to learn patience and all that we do. [00:04:29] Speaker A: And have trust and faith in Jesus so that we have the desire to have faith and trust in him, but also to obey Him. [00:04:40] Speaker B: Right. [00:04:41] Speaker A: And to have patience in his plans. [00:04:43] Speaker B: For us, because he'll provide. Just like he provided his spirit. He'll provide for us. He knows our plans and all of that, and he knows his plan. Okay, so while you guys are listening, I have two questions for you. So just think about them. Write them in your journal. But the first one is, learning to be patient is an important part of life with God. He doesn't always do things in the way or time we expect. So we must be patient as we wait on Him. Patience is just one response we might have to the story. What are other feelings you experience thinking of the story of Saul? Okay, so write that one down and just think about it. Pause the podcast if you want. Yeah. And then I'll read the second one for you guys. So the second question is, what are some ways a person might demonstrate patience? So just think about it, write it down, and you can share with us on Sunday if you'd like. We'd love to hear it. [00:05:41] Speaker A: Okay, before we go, what stood out to you? Haven? [00:05:45] Speaker B: Probably the part where Samuel gave his, like, pep talk to the people. I mean, and he was just like, fear the Lord, worship him and obey him. But at the end of his speech, he said he will not abandon his people. So, like, I think they forgot that part of the speech, if I'm being honest with you. And I think I forget that part of the speech, but because the. The people, like, the soldiers left, like they were scared, and they were like, ah, we're alone. And they left, and I think they forgot that what Samuel had said, God won't abandon his people. And I forget all the time, like, oh, right. I'm not alone. What stood up to you? [00:06:33] Speaker A: I mean, it really is just kind of the overview of how Saul was impatient, but I feel like I connect to that. [00:06:41] Speaker B: Mm. [00:06:41] Speaker A: Because I. Once again, nine square. [00:06:44] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:06:45] Speaker A: Really impatient. But it's just. It's a very. It's a bigger picture on patience, and it's a good example. So that's what I'll take from this. It's just to have patience and to have grace on other people. [00:07:00] Speaker B: Right. Yeah. [00:07:01] Speaker A: Yeah. Okay. Well, we'll see y' all next week. [00:07:05] Speaker B: Yep. That was it for this week. Bye.
