[00:00:03] Speaker A: Hey, welcome to the Summer Journey podcast with Haven and Ella.
Hey, guys. Welcome to episode one.
[00:00:14] Speaker B: So we're doing something really exciting in our podcast where we have a code word, so make sure you're listening for maybe words that we repeat a lot or just words that stick out to you, because it could possibly be the code word.
[00:00:31] Speaker A: So, yeah, make sure you write it down, too, because we'll be checking those guesses.
[00:00:35] Speaker B: Yes. When we check on Sundays.
Today, we're talking about how the Israelites wanted a king.
[00:00:41] Speaker A: The Israelites were like, hey, your sons, we don't like them. Like, no, thanks. We want our own.
And they were like, look, Samuel, like, we need someone else.
[00:00:53] Speaker B: Yeah, they. Their. Their faith was very little. Right. They didn't want God as their ruler.
[00:00:59] Speaker A: Right. They were so in their own way of, like, we just want human thoughts and we want our human king. They didn't even give God a second look.
[00:01:09] Speaker B: Yeah.
And they really, like, they kind of wanted to be like the nations around them, right. That they were surrounded by. All of the nations around them had human. Human kings, so they really were just looking around, and they wanted a human king as well.
[00:01:26] Speaker A: Like, you ever.
Let's see. Ella, you ever, like, looked at someone be like, oh, my gosh, that is so cute.
[00:01:32] Speaker B: Can I buy that shoes?
[00:01:34] Speaker A: Oh, my gosh, yes.
[00:01:34] Speaker B: I want to be like them because I like their shoes.
[00:01:36] Speaker A: Yes. Those shoes. I'm gonna buy them because they're so good. Like, all those. You remember where checkered vans were a thing?
[00:01:44] Speaker B: Yes. I used to love them.
[00:01:46] Speaker A: Everyone wanted checkered vans. Like the Israelites. They wanted them checkered vans.
[00:01:51] Speaker B: So trusting God can mean or can look like different ways, but it can mean our lives look different from those around us. Like our. Our friends, our buddies at school, or really anybody, really.
[00:02:05] Speaker A: Literally.
[00:02:05] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:02:06] Speaker A: Like, I want my own shoes. Like, what if. What if I. Those vans didn't make me, like, look, I have really sensitive feet. Like, those fans give me zero support.
I wanted me some. Some.
I don't even know, tennis shoes.
And that's what I wanted. And guess what? I might be made fun of them for.
[00:02:27] Speaker B: But then in the end, we see just how God's plan always prevails, how he. It's always seen in scripture, especially here, where God tells Samuel that he would send a man to rule over his people, which is Saul.
[00:02:46] Speaker A: Right? Where Saul comes in.
[00:02:47] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:02:48] Speaker A: So, like, even with, like, all of this, God still was like, okay, I hear you. I hear them rejecting me. But it's not gonna go without warning. Like, especially because when Samuel went to the people. He was like, just so you know, here's the things the king will do.
He will take your sons to join his army, take your daughters to serve in his house, take your best friends, take a tenth of your crops and your flocks, and you will cry out for help.
[00:03:15] Speaker B: Through this, we can just see how God's plans are so much bigger than our own.
I think. Well, at least I do, but I bet you do, too. I'm always in my head of how I want this. I want this. I like my plans. I want my own plans. But God's plans are always bigger. Okay, so going back to our story, we know how the Israelites rejected God as their king and chose Saul to be their king, right?
[00:03:39] Speaker A: Because they were so not content, so uncontent. Like, content was not there.
[00:03:44] Speaker B: There was zero.
[00:03:45] Speaker A: Zero content.
[00:03:46] Speaker B: Zero.
But they. They were right. They were sinning by rejecting God. They were. They had their sinful desires and they wanted their own.
They wanted control. They wanted control in their lives, Right?
They rejected God. But when we sin, we also reject God's role in our lives as our king.
[00:04:11] Speaker A: Right?
[00:04:12] Speaker B: But we know the story of Jesus and how Jesus, the king of kings, died for our sins and rose again so that we could be forgiven of our sins.
[00:04:23] Speaker A: So when we're not content, when we.
[00:04:25] Speaker B: Are not content and we go the other way, he still forgives us, which is so cool and so forgiving.
[00:04:32] Speaker A: I mean, we don't deserve it, but.
[00:04:34] Speaker B: He does it anyways because he loves us so much.
[00:04:36] Speaker A: Right? Yeah. Like, why wouldn't we want to be content with Jesus? Like, he loves us, and that's something we should be content in. And the Israelites were not content with that.
[00:04:47] Speaker B: So that's something to learn, something to.
[00:04:49] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:04:49] Speaker B: Be aware of.
What was your favorite part or what stood out to you? Haven.
[00:04:54] Speaker A: Oh, my gosh. There's so many things, like, trusting God requires faith, like, which you.
[00:05:01] Speaker B: You hear it a lot.
[00:05:02] Speaker A: You're like, yeah, yeah.
[00:05:04] Speaker B: Like, yeah, trusting God. I gotta trust God.
[00:05:06] Speaker A: Duh. But it's harder, but it is like, Jesus, take the wheel moment. I can't do that on the highway, can I? Like, jesus, take the wheel.
Like, dude, sometimes it is a free fall. Not without a parachute. Please don't go jumping on the cliff. Okay.
But, like, that's a big thing.
[00:05:24] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:05:24] Speaker A: Trust and faith.
Faith, trust and pixie dust.
But actually, it's faith, trust and the Holy Spirit.
[00:05:31] Speaker B: So Holy Spirit, something that stood out to me, that I loved was.
But God's plan was bigger.
But God's plan was bigger because we always, we always want to take that wheel.
[00:05:45] Speaker A: Let me just NASCAR this.
[00:05:46] Speaker B: We do.
Yes. But God's plan is always bigger for us.
[00:05:52] Speaker A: Yeah, that's what I love. Yeah. So, okay, well, I don't know about you, but I heard that code word a couple times. A couple times too many.
[00:06:02] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:06:03] Speaker A: But we're glad you guys tuned in. Yes. Tune back in next week.
[00:06:09] Speaker B: Tune in. We'll see you Thursday again.
And don't forget to write what you think the code word was because we will be checking your books on Sunday.
[00:06:18] Speaker A: And you might get a shout out if you got it right.
Shout out. Shout out here.
And sometime soon, like we might be getting a couple of you in here with us to have some more fun, talk about the Lord.
[00:06:32] Speaker B: Yes.
[00:06:32] Speaker A: Okay.
[00:06:33] Speaker B: Bye, guys.
[00:06:34] Speaker A: Well, thanks. Bye.
[00:06:35] Speaker B: No. Ready.
