[00:00:00] Speaker A: Foreign. [00:00:06] Speaker B: Welcome to the summer Journey podcast with Haven and Ella. Hey, guys. Welcome back. What is this? Episode seven? [00:00:21] Speaker A: Seven. [00:00:21] Speaker B: Yeah, I think. [00:00:22] Speaker A: I'm pretty sure. [00:00:23] Speaker B: Yes. [00:00:24] Speaker A: Yes. Before we get into what we've been or what we're learning today. What our code word. [00:00:32] Speaker B: Last week, our code word was courage. I believe there are two shout outs. [00:00:46] Speaker A: Yes. [00:00:46] Speaker B: For this week, which would be Alice Herring and Elsie, so. [00:00:51] Speaker A: Oh, yes, I remember that. [00:00:53] Speaker B: Good job, girls. [00:00:54] Speaker A: Good job, guys. Girls. Yes. So today we are learning about how David showed mercy. Yes. And so we'll just get right into it. So David became a leader. [00:01:18] Speaker B: Right. Because this was. This was after David and Goliath. So he, like, showed. Yes. All of that. So. [00:01:24] Speaker A: Yes. [00:01:25] Speaker B: He was kind of, like, high up there now. [00:01:27] Speaker A: Yes. And so Saul. Right. He was. He was way more successful in battle than Saul in his army. So Saul was very jealous of David, which, honestly, I would have been too, maybe a little bit. And so Saul decided to hunt David down. Yeah. And to kill him. Insane. [00:01:51] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:01:52] Speaker A: I don't think I would ever act out. [00:01:53] Speaker B: Like, got so jealous. [00:01:54] Speaker A: Got out of jealousy. He's gotta go. He wanted to kill him. So I hope you guys know that that's wrong. [00:02:02] Speaker B: Yeah. It's in the Ten Commandments. Do not murder. And so David and his army, while they were chasing after. Or not David. Saul and his army were chasing after David to kill him. Saul had to go potty. He had to take a little potty break. And so he found a very nice cave to go to the bathroom in, and he went to the ca. And that's exactly where David and his men were hiding. Go figure. [00:02:35] Speaker A: So then David snuck up behind Saul while he was going to the bathroom and cut off a corner of his robe, which I'm trying to, like, imagine that. Like, how did he. [00:02:48] Speaker B: Dude must have been so stealthy. [00:02:50] Speaker A: Like, it's crazy. Okay. And so after David felt terrible for cutting off a corner of Saul's robe, so David said to his men, I should have never done such thing to a man. Anointed. Anointed by the Lord. [00:03:08] Speaker B: Because he still was. Like, Saul was anointed by the Lord to be their king. And even though David knew he would be the next in line, like, that still wasn't right of him. Like, his conscious took over. [00:03:22] Speaker A: Yeah. And so Saul left the cave and. And then David followed him out of the cave and called to him, saying, my lord, the king. And then Saul returned. Or Saul turned around and David knelt. Knelt him and said, why do you listen to the people who say, I want to hurt You. I could have killed you in the cave, but I showed mercy because you are the Lord. Lord's anointed. See, I have the corner of your robe in my hand. I cut it off, but I didn't kill you. And he said, I haven't sinned against you, even though you're hunting me down to take my life. [00:04:00] Speaker B: That's big. [00:04:01] Speaker A: Which is so powerful. Yeah, so powerful. [00:04:04] Speaker B: That's crazy. Like, he so could have. He could have protected himself and killed him first, but he didn't because that wasn't what God asked him to do. [00:04:14] Speaker A: Like, he showed forgiveness. Yeah, Forgiveness and mercy. Like. [00:04:18] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:04:19] Speaker A: And so then David told Saul that God is their judge, that only God could decide to. Only God could decide who is right and rescue David from Saul. Then David said that he would never harm Saul. [00:04:33] Speaker B: That's crazy. He would never harm the man who had literally gone out to kill him. That's insane. [00:04:41] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:04:43] Speaker B: And then Saul, like, just wept and he just, like, cried because he realized. And he said to him, you're more righteous than I am. And then he said, may the Lord repay you, you with good for what you've done for me today. Now I know for certain you will be king over kingdom of Israel. So now Saul is like. [00:05:04] Speaker A: Knows. [00:05:04] Speaker B: He is like, he figured it out. He's like, he is going to be the next king because of this, his actions and all of that. [00:05:11] Speaker A: Yeah, his actions. Through his actions and his mercy. Yeah. Yeah. Wow. That was very powerful. I do want to go back to the jealousy part at the beginning, right? He wanted. Saul wanted to kill David because he was jealous of him, because he didn't want him to be king instead of him. So his jealousy made him act out into sin. Right. He sought to kill him. And so it could have destroyed relationships between him. Yeah, yeah. And then also, David could have totally killed. [00:05:51] Speaker B: Absolutely right. [00:05:52] Speaker A: He, like. Like, he really could. [00:05:57] Speaker B: He was right there. Like, dude was so vulnerable. [00:05:59] Speaker A: Yeah, he was so vulnerable. [00:06:00] Speaker B: He was going to the bathroom. Like, that is one of the most vulnerable places is going to the bathroom, literally. And he had full advantage of it. [00:06:09] Speaker A: And he didn't do it, but he showed. He showed complete mercy and didn't kill. [00:06:15] Speaker B: Him, which let him live. Yeah, he let him live. And, like, mercy is a big part of God's character, and us showing mercy to others reflects that. And that's how we're called to live. Like Jesus. And so it's like he. Even Saul saw it at the end, like, what you've done for me today, I know for certain. Like, because of his actions. [00:06:39] Speaker A: Yes. Yeah. Like God show. Like God shows us mercy every day. [00:06:46] Speaker B: Absolutely. [00:06:48] Speaker A: Mercy. I've heard, like, the blessings upon blessings, but mercy upon mercy upon mercy. Like, he gives us mercy through absolutely everything every day. Yeah. Mercy, mercy, mercy, mercy, mercy. [00:07:01] Speaker B: Literally. [00:07:03] Speaker A: Yeah. So that really was it. Like, showing. Showing mercy. Right, How. How David showed mercy to Saul and. Right. Just like how God gives us mercy every day. [00:07:18] Speaker B: I think we'll leave you with a question and something to ponder on. Yes, here is one. So we've talked a lot about showing mercy to people when they want to harm us, but it's not always easy to be merciful. Just like Ellis had said, sometimes we want to get even with people who hurt us or we may feel angry. So what are some other ways you might respond when someone is unkind to you? That's a really good question, and I think we should definitely. It's one of those you need to sit down with and probably, like, take a minute. You don't have to write down immediately first thing you think of. [00:07:54] Speaker A: Just. [00:07:54] Speaker B: Just think about it. [00:07:58] Speaker A: Yeah. Okay. Well, we'll see you later, y'. [00:08:00] Speaker B: All. Bye.
